What Ontario law requires

In Ontario, a business that does electrical work for pay needs an electrical contractor licence from the Electrical Contractor Registration Agency (ECRA), part of the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). The licence number should be printed on quotes, invoices, vehicles and the company website.

A licensed contractor also takes out an ESA permit, which brings an inspection and a record of the work. Insurers and home buyers often ask to see it.

Questions worth asking

Can I see your licence number?

Check it yourself with the ESA's online contractor lookup.

Who files the permit?

It should be the contractor. If you're asked to pull it yourself, ask why.

Is the quote in writing?

It should list the scope, materials and anything that isn't included.

Who will be in my home?

Know who's doing the work and who to call with questions.

How Much Does an Electrical Contractor Cost?

Expect about $150 to $350 for a small repair and about $2,000 to $4,500 for a panel upgrade. Renovation and new build work is priced from drawings or a site visit.
