Hot tub and spa wiring
Hot Tub Wiring Caledonia
Have your hot tub's circuit and GFCI disconnect ready before delivery, so you can fill it and enjoy it.
Wiring a hot tub safely
A typical hot tub draws 40 to 60 amps at 240 volts, so it gets a circuit of its own. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code also calls for a GFCI-protected disconnect the owner can see from the tub, plus grounding and bonding that keep water and electricity safely apart.
Before the dealer drops the tub off, we confirm the panel can carry it and run the circuit, so hookup day is short.
What's included
Panel review
We check that the tub fits within your service along with the furnace, dryer, range and everything else.
Its own circuit
Wire and breaker matched to the amperage on the tub's spec sheet, run indoors, overhead or underground.
Spa disconnect
A GFCI-protected shutoff placed at the distance the code requires, where you can reach it quickly.
Bonding and the permit
Metal parts bonded as required, with an ESA permit and inspection on every install.
Hot Tub Wiring in Caledonia: Planning It Right
- Share the model name or spec sheet and walk us out to where the tub will go.
- We look at the panel and decide on the best route for the wire.
- A written quote comes next, and once you approve it we file the ESA permit.
- The circuit and disconnect are installed, ideally a few days before delivery.
- When the tub is on its base, we connect it, power it up and test the GFCI.
No spare capacity in the panel? A panel upgrade might need to happen first. More on our electrician in Caledonia, Ontario home page.
Hot tub checklist
- Ask the dealer for the voltage and amp rating before you buy
- Pick a location away from overhead power lines
- Have the panel looked at early, since it can affect which tub you choose
- Book the electrical work ahead of delivery day
- Have a level pad or reinforced deck ready for the tub
How Much Does Hot Tub Wiring Cost?
The biggest factors are how far the tub sits from the panel, how the wire gets there (through the house, overhead or in a trench), the size of the circuit and whether your panel has open spaces. We give you a price once we've seen both the panel and the spot you've picked.
Hot Tub Wiring questions
Can a hot tub plug into a regular outlet?
Only small 120-volt plug-and-play models. Most full-size tubs need a dedicated 240-volt circuit.
Where does the disconnect have to go?
Within sight of the tub and at the minimum distance the code sets. We'll show you the options at the quote.
Should the wiring be done before delivery?
Yes. With the circuit already in, the final connection takes very little time.
Is a permit needed?
Yes. Hot tub circuits need an ESA permit, and we take care of it.
